A Death in November 2020
Daphne Reckert’s grandfather died in November 2020, one of the millions of lives lost during the COVID-19 pandemic. He had already been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, and as his health declined, the management of his French chateau had become a neglected burden. Daphne, then living outside France, was called to move and help oversee the property. The chateau, which he had purchased in 1981 as a retirement home, was intended as a private retreat. But the property was never sustainable as a residence; it quickly became a rental venue for weddings and events. When the estate passed to Daphne, the inheritance tax was crippling. She has said publicly that she could not afford it and was faced with the prospect of losing the chateau entirely or taking on a challenge she feared she might fail.
The Grandfather’s Gamble
Daphne’s grandfather built his fortune in the travel industry, where he worked his way up as a self-made entrepreneur. He bought the chateau in 1981 with the intention of retiring there. His own math quickly told him the property could not pay for itself, so he shifted to renting it out for weddings and other events. After the grandfather’s death, Daphne and her husband, Ian Figueira, moved into her grandmother’s Paris apartment in 2021 while they worked to revive the chateau’s business. In 2022, the couple moved back into the chateau. The grandparents had divorced years earlier, after building a life together and raising two children. Daphne has described the split as her grandmother’s choice: she wanted to do her own thing. The couple only began spending time together again when Daphne visited France in the summers. By the end of the grandfather’s life, they had not rekindled the marriage, but they rebuilt a deep friendship. In Season 2, the renovation focus shifted to the property’s gatehouse, which was restored so the grandmother could live on the estate rather than remain in Paris.
The Construction Family
Daphne’s own family background prepared her for the hands-on work the chateau demanded. Her father is a painting contractor, and she spent her high school years painting for him. He also taught her stone artistry, a skill that directly applies to the chateau’s masonry. Her mother is an interior designer. That combination of building and design is visible in how the couple approached the renovation: they worked to rebuild the chateau’s wedding and event business so the revenue could fund the construction. The family appeared on screen in Season 2, with special guest appearances from Daphne’s father and grandmother. The show’s second season also captured a major personal development: Daphne announced she was pregnant during filming, meaning the family tree at the center of the series is set to expand.
A Half-Sister and the Next Generation
One of the Season 2 guest appearances came from Daphne’s sister, Sabrina, who was seven years old when she visited the chateau in 2026. Sabrina is Daphne’s half-sister through their father’s new relationship. The show’s second season featured the chateau’s transition from a construction site into an operating venue, with the wedding business funding the next phase of renovations. For Daphne, the stakes are personal as well as financial. She has spoken candidly about the pressure of inheriting a property with a tax burden she could not pay. The gatehouse renovation, which provides a home for Daphne’s grandmother, is a step toward keeping the estate in the family for another generation.
